Meet the master perfumers – Dominique Ropion

The Parisian who created some of the most popular fragrances

He says about him that, when he was a child, he related to the world around him more through smells than perfumes. And that, at the same time, he was able to smell anything, even a handshake. Dominique Ropion is one of the famous perfumers about who the top-notch experts in the field have declared that he is the author of some of the most elaborate formulas and fragrances up to date.

Dominique grew up in Paris, with a mother and a grandfather who worked at Roure, one of the famous perfume companies of the twentieth century. Thus, he knew a lot about this profession, as he even worked during his holiday in the same company. However, the idea of creating himself perfumes came much later. After high school he began studying physics and decided to become an engineer.

However, years later, he had the opportunity to attend a training within the Roure company. He met then the top perfumers Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Pierre Bourdon, got the bug and, moreover, got convinced. He said yes. Three years of study in Grasse followed, and then he received the position of junior perfumer at Roure in Argenteuil. There he created all that you can imagine: home perfumes, shampoo or hair sprays fragrances.

Then he participated in an important competition, where he proposed a formula for a fragrance, which was selected by Givenchy for Ysatis – and it soon became famous.

From 2000, Dominique Ropion is part of the famous team of IFF Fine Fragrance in Paris. Since then and till today he has created lots of fragrances that are now known in the whole wide world, like Amor Amor for Cacharel, Euphoria for Calvin Klein, to Pure Poison for Christian Dior, Aqua di Gioia for Giorgio Armani and the several marvelous versions for La Vie Est Belle for Lancome or Alien for Thierry Mugler.
